Why vinyl
When vinyl makes sense
For most Salem-area homes, vinyl is the best mix of performance, durability and price. It’s a particularly good fit if:
- You have original single-pane wood or aluminum windows that are drafty, sweaty or hard to operate.
- Your wood frames are peeling, soft or rotting and you’re tired of painting.
- Your older double-pane windows have failed seals and fog between the glass.
- You want lower heating and cooling bills and a quieter house.
- You’re a landlord or own a rental and want windows that don’t need upkeep.

Frames & glass
What goes into a good vinyl window
Frame options
Multi-chambered vinyl frames insulate and resist warping. Depending on the product line, you can choose from several colors, grid patterns and hardware finishes.
Low-E double pane
A thin Low-E coating reflects heat back inside in winter and keeps it out in summer. Argon gas between the panes adds insulation. This is the right choice for most homes.
Triple pane
A third layer of glass for more insulation and noticeably less outside noise. It’s worth considering for bedrooms, homes on busy streets and the coldest rooms in the house.
Warm-edge spacers
The spacer between panes keeps the edge of the glass warmer, which helps cut condensation around the bottom of the window.
Specialty glass
Obscure glass for bathrooms, tempered safety glass where code requires it, and grids for a traditional look.
UV protection
Low-E glass blocks much of the UV light that fades floors, furniture and artwork.

Condensation, fog and failed seals
Moisture on windows is one of the most common reasons people call us. Where the moisture is tells you what’s going on:

| Water on the inside glass | Humid indoor air meeting cold glass. Common with single-pane and aluminum windows. New Low-E glass stays warmer and helps a lot. |
| Fog between the panes | The seal has failed and the insulating gas has leaked out. The glass unit or window needs replacing. |
| Water on the outside glass | Normal on cool mornings with efficient windows. It means the glass is keeping your heat inside. |
| Water on the sill or wall | A possible leak around the window. Call us for an inspection before it causes damage. |
Installation
How we install vinyl windows
A good window can still leak or draft if it’s installed poorly. That’s why we’ve never subcontracted our installs.
Protect the house
Drop cloths inside and tarps outside to catch debris and protect landscaping.
Remove the old window
Retrofit installs keep the existing frame. Full-frame installs go down to the rough opening so we can fix damaged framing.
Set, level and seal
The new window is shimmed plumb and square, insulated and sealed against air and water.
Finish and clean
Trim goes back on, the site is cleaned, and your new windows are cleaned inside and out.

Are vinyl windows good for Oregon’s climate?
Yes. Vinyl doesn’t absorb water, so it won’t rot, swell or peel during long wet Willamette Valley winters, and it never needs painting. Quality vinyl frames also insulate well, which helps in both cold winters and hot summer spells.
Why do I get condensation on my windows?
Condensation on the inside of the glass happens when warm, humid indoor air hits a cold surface. Older single-pane and aluminum windows are cold, so they sweat. Modern Low-E double or triple-pane glass stays warmer, which cuts condensation a lot. Fog between the panes is different: it means the seal has failed and the glass unit needs replacing.
Can you fix one foggy window instead of replacing everything?
Yes. We replace single windows and failed glass units as well as whole houses. Call and describe what you’re seeing and we’ll tell you the options.
How long do vinyl windows last?
Quality vinyl windows that are installed correctly commonly last for decades. Some of our customers call us 20 or 25 years after their first install, when they’re ready to update another part of the house.
Do vinyl windows come in colors other than white?
Yes. Depending on the brand and product line, frames are available in several interior and exterior colors, and you can add grids, obscure glass and other options. We’ll bring samples to your estimate.
